For the City: Logo Design Process

_________________________________________________________________________________

I recently had the wonderful opportunity to help Eric and Tricia Mullis with their ministry blog, For the City. It was an absolute joy to talk to them about their work in Bangkok, Thailand and the vision God's given them for ministry. They wanted to use their blog as a platform to share what God is doing in their city and within their family. So the goal was to come up with a logo that they could use on the blog and on other social media settings. Well, we're all excited about the outcome, and I thought it would be fun to show part of the creative process on the Texture blog.

Below you can see round one of the logo rough drafts. Eric stated that he wanted the logo to portray the city aspect somehow, so I started playing around with the skyline in different formats.
After reviewing round one's logos, we narrowed the selections down to two. We liked the fish with the city inside as well as the city coming up from the offering plate. Both logos were meaningful and representative of the vision God has given the Mullis family.  To narrow it down even further, I presented the two logo ideas in color. Below, you can see a few of the color options with optional social media icons beside them.

After studying the color options, Eric came back and said they had picked the winner. The final selection was the offering plate with the word "city" outlined. (Personally, I was hoping they would select that logo).

This logo is unique and causes your eye to linger, but it also represents so many aspects of their ministry. Because of what God has done for them, they are offering up their life (represented by the offering plate) for God to use them in Bangkok. And yet, they are also presenting the people with a gift from God that is "For the City"--the good news of Jesus. So in that sense, the plate represents them offering a gift to the people. To go one step farther, they are trusting their ministry to the Lord, so it is as if they are placing their Bangkok ministry back in the offering plate and giving it to the Lord for him to lead however he desires.

Below are all of the final logo versions and color selections:
